There are two kinds of approximation and they are both chromatic, the approach above and the approach below the note that is considered the melody.

Using common notes between two chords belonging to different scales to allow a smooth passing between them when improvising in the blues and dorian modes.

Using mostly only "neighbour" notes - no no weird scales or anything like that. For example, to play note A we add note G# before, or Bb, depending of situation.
